in france, ‘mid-century’ is known as the ‘trente glorieuses’, the glorious thirties – referring to the post-war era of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. an era characterised by progress, optimism and rapid technological development. one of the most active furniture companies of that period was ‘meubles efa’, founded by georges frydman (1924 – 2022). as a qualified architect, he was particularly taken with le corbusier’s work and also with the principles of the bauhaus in pre-war germany. after finishing his studies he built his own house and (like many architects) designed the furniture for it, too.

maybe this experience led him to found his own company in 1954, dedicated to the design, production and distribution of functional furniture: ‚meubles efa‘ (équipement fonctionnel de l’habitation). based in nice, france (with a showroom in rue de rennes in paris), the company became a well-known brand from the 1950s to the 1970s, offering functional and practical furniture with modernist aesthetics. he often used innovative materials like plexiglas/perspex or formica, tinted glass and exotic veneers such as rosewood or mahogany, combined with tubular steel bases, later replaced by aluminium and stainless steel / chrome in the 1960s and 70s.

frydman showcased modular wall systems, sideboards, desks, dining and side tables, and table and floor lamps with an architectural flair – everything you needed for a modern household. up until today – this medium sized dining table fits every elegant modern surrounding.
